Sam's grandfather, HW Leong, was a war hero who, in 1941, saved thousands of prisoners. Sam's father, Alan Leong, went to school in a canvas tent and became a school teacher. Sam overcame adversity at a young age and understands the challenges faced by many families. He was born in 1965 and grew up in Singapore's racially diverse democracy.
At 13, he started work at a grocery store. Sam didn't brood over misfortunes. Instead, he developed a concept that would become his theme. It was something he called 'mindset', and this powerful force ensured good things would happen.
Sam hoarded many on-campus jobs to pay for his tuition at the University of Texas at Austin. He accepted a scholarship to pursue his MSc when he graduated at the top of his class. Sam cut his teeth at Hewlett Packard, where he built printers worldwide. He was promoted to regional marketing manager by 1995. Sam invented the world's 1st recyclable inkjet media in 1997 and founded SAMINK® to manufacture inkjet inks in 1999.
Sam toiled 16-hour days. In the mornings, he would wear down the heels of his shoes in search of clients. In the afternoons, he would paint blotches of sweat on his shirt and strained muscles on his back from making inks.
It has been a journey with many wrong turns, but Sam ensured that those mistakes would never happen again. Sam and his wife, Dr Grace, have three children, Elizabeth, 21; Victoria, 18; & Alexander, 13.
